Wendi McLendon-Covey Disputes Jeff Garlin’s New Claims About The Goldbergs
Wendi McLendon-Covey has publicly challenged Jeff Garlin’s recent account of his departure from The Goldbergs, saying her memory of what happened on the ABC sitcom differs significantly from his.
The renewed dispute follows comments Garlin made on The Daily Beast’s “Obsessed” podcast, where he discussed his struggles while working on the series and connected some of his behavior at the time to an undiagnosed bipolar disorder diagnosis. Garlin also suggested that McLendon-Covey, who played his on-screen wife, Beverly Goldberg, had become resentful after he left the show.
McLendon-Covey responded on social media, making clear that she does not share Garlin’s version of events.
Wendi McLendon-Covey Says She Remembers It Differently
After a clip from Garlin’s podcast appearance circulated online, McLendon-Covey initially responded with “Huh.”
She later gave a more direct response when asked about Garlin’s comments, writing that she remembers the situation differently, as do others who worked on the sitcom.
“Let’s just say I remember things very differently,” she said, adding that the crew, other actors, writers and executives also have different recollections.
Her response is significant because Garlin’s latest comments attempted to provide additional context for his behavior during the later years of his run on the series.
What Jeff Garlin Said About His Behavior
Garlin played Murray Goldberg, the father of the family at the center of The Goldbergs, from the show’s premiere in 2013 until his departure in 2021.
During his recent podcast appearance, Garlin said he was struggling at the time and had not yet been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He described experiencing periods of extreme darkness, mania and anger, and said he was unhappy with his work on the show.
Garlin also discussed McLendon-Covey, saying he empathized with her because of what he was going through at the time. He recalled her encouraging him about his performance but said she ultimately became resentful after he left.
Garlin has also expressed appreciation for McLendon-Covey’s acting and said he does not hold resentment toward her, despite the difficult history between them.
Why Jeff Garlin Left The Goldbergs
Garlin’s exit from The Goldbergs came in December 2021 following reports of multiple complaints and an internal human-resources investigation into his on-set behavior.
Contemporary reporting described allegations involving verbal conduct and unwanted physical contact. Garlin disputed aspects of those reports at the time, including denying that he had physically attacked anyone. He characterized some of the controversy as a disagreement over his comedic style and behavior on set.
ABC and Sony Pictures Television announced that Garlin would leave the show, with reports describing the decision as mutual.
Because the allegations and the participants’ recollections have differed, claims about what happened should be attributed to the people and reports making them rather than presented as a single uncontested account.
McLendon-Covey Has Previously Discussed the Exit
This is not the first time McLendon-Covey has spoken about the circumstances surrounding Garlin’s departure.
In 2022, she publicly defended the show’s handling of his exit. In a 2023 interview, she described the departure as something that had been a long time coming and discussed the emotional toll the situation had taken on her.
Her latest comments therefore represent a continuation of an issue she has previously addressed rather than a completely new dispute.
What Happened to Murray Goldberg?
Garlin’s departure created an unusual production challenge because The Goldbergs was still filming its ninth season.
The show used previously recorded material, a stand-in and visual effects to keep Murray appearing in some episodes after Garlin stopped working on the series. The character was eventually written out, with the 10th-season premiere revealing that Murray had died.
The Goldbergs ultimately concluded in 2023 after 10 seasons.
Why the Dispute Is Back in the Headlines
The renewed attention is largely driven by the conflicting accounts of a highly publicized chapter in the sitcom’s history.
Garlin’s recent comments offer his explanation for his behavior and emotional state during the period surrounding his departure. McLendon-Covey’s response, meanwhile, indicates that her recollection—and that of other people who worked on the production—does not match his narrative.
For viewers, the disagreement also highlights how differently former colleagues can remember the same workplace experience, particularly when allegations, internal investigations and personal circumstances are involved.
For now, there is no new Goldbergs production connected to the dispute. The immediate development is the renewed public discussion between the former co-stars and the contrasting accounts of what happened behind the scenes.
