Verity Movie Hits Theaters: Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson Lead Colleen Hoover Adaptation
Colleen Hoover’s Verity has officially arrived in U.S. theaters, turning one of the author’s most widely discussed psychological thrillers into a major big-screen release.
The film opens Friday, October 2, 2026, with Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett leading the cast. Directed by Michael Showalter, the movie adapts Hoover’s bestselling 2018 novel and is being released theatrically by Amazon MGM Studios.
The theatrical release is the immediate reason “Verity” is trending, particularly among readers familiar with Hoover’s novel and moviegoers searching for information about the adaptation, cast and where to watch it.
What Is the Verity Movie About?
The story follows Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer played by Dakota Johnson.
Lowen is hired to continue the successful book series of Verity Crawford, a bestselling author portrayed by Anne Hathaway who is unable to finish her work after a serious accident.
Lowen moves into the Crawford family’s home to work on the unfinished books. While there, she discovers what appear to be disturbing autobiographical writings belonging to Verity.
The discovery creates questions about what actually happened inside the Crawford household and whether the manuscript represents truth, fiction or something deliberately constructed.
Josh Hartnett plays Jeremy Crawford, Verity’s husband.
The film also features Ismael Cruz Córdova, Brady Wagner and other supporting cast members.
Why Verity Is Trending Now
The timing is straightforward: the movie is opening in theaters today, October 2.
Amazon MGM released its latest trailer in August, building awareness ahead of the theatrical launch. The official trailer prominently features Hathaway, Johnson and Hartnett while introducing the central mystery surrounding Verity and her writings.
The movie also arrives as another major adaptation of Hoover’s work.
Her novel It Ends With Us previously became a theatrical film in 2024, while other Hoover adaptations have followed. The Verity film therefore arrives with an established audience already familiar with the author’s work and the broader trend of her novels moving from books to screens.
Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett Drive the Cast
The casting has been one of the biggest talking points surrounding the adaptation.
Hathaway takes on the title role of Verity Crawford, while Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh. Hartnett portrays Jeremy Crawford.
That combination gives the movie three recognizable names at the center of a psychological thriller built around secrecy, relationships and competing versions of the truth.
Hathaway and Johnson are also connected to the film’s production, with Hathaway credited as a producer and Johnson as an executive producer.
Is Verity Available to Stream?
For viewers searching for the movie today, the important distinction is that Verity is launching as a theatrical release rather than a same-day streaming movie.
The film is currently playing in theaters, while a home-streaming release has not been announced for October 2. Amazon MGM has positioned the movie as a theatrical release.
That makes today’s theatrical debut particularly relevant for fans who want to see the adaptation immediately rather than wait for its eventual streaming availability.
The Book’s Mystery Comes With the Movie
One reason the adaptation is attracting attention is the nature of Hoover’s original story.
The novel deliberately creates uncertainty around the manuscript Lowen discovers and the people involved in the Crawford household. The film’s marketing has similarly emphasized the question of whether the writings reveal reality or another layer of manipulation.
Because of that structure, audiences who have not read the book may want to avoid detailed plot explanations before seeing the movie.
For readers who already know Verity, the theatrical release offers an opportunity to compare Hoover’s controversial thriller with Showalter’s cinematic interpretation without giving away the film’s major turns.
