Netflix Ends The Lincoln Lawyer With Season 5 as Cobie Smulders’ Emi Finch Spinoff Takes Shape
Netflix is closing the book on Mickey Haller while preparing to expand The Lincoln Lawyer universe in a surprising new direction.
The streamer has confirmed that the upcoming fifth season of The Lincoln Lawyer will be the show’s final season, bringing Manuel Garcia-Rulfo’s run as Los Angeles defense attorney Mickey Haller to an end. At the same time, Netflix is developing a potential spinoff centered on Cobie Smulders’ Emi Finch, Mickey’s previously unknown half-sister.
The news creates a bittersweet future for fans: Mickey Haller’s main story is heading toward its conclusion, but the legal drama’s fictional universe could continue through Emi.
The Lincoln Lawyer Season 5 Will Be the Final Season
Netflix announced in May 2026 that Season 5 would be the fifth and final season of The Lincoln Lawyer. The series is currently in production and is expected to give Mickey Haller and his team a proper conclusion.
Creators Ted Humphrey and Dailyn Rodriguez said the goal from the beginning was not only to tell Mickey’s story but also to give it a meaningful ending.
That decision does not necessarily mean the franchise is disappearing. Instead, Netflix appears to be using the final season to introduce a new path for the wider universe.
Cobie Smulders’ Emi Finch Could Lead the Next Chapter
Cobie Smulders, best known for How I Met Your Mother and her role as Maria Hill in Marvel projects, joined The Lincoln Lawyer in Season 4 as Emi Finch.
Emi’s arrival delivered one of the season’s biggest twists. After saving Mickey from an apparent attack, she revealed that she was his half-sister — someone Mickey had never known existed.
Her role becomes significantly more important in Season 5. Netflix’s official synopsis says Emi approaches Mickey for help freeing a woman who was wrongfully convicted of murder, setting him on a difficult legal battle involving a six-year-old conviction.
That storyline gives the character a natural bridge from supporting player to potential franchise lead.
The Emi Finch Spinoff Is Still in Early Development
Reports in August indicated that Netflix was fast-tracking a spinoff centered on Smulders’ character, with The Lincoln Lawyer executive producers Ted Humphrey, Dailyn Rodriguez and Matthew J. Lieberman involved in developing the project. A+E Studios is also attached.
However, there is an important distinction between the reported development and a finished Netflix series.
The spinoff remains in its early stages, with key deals still being worked out and no official production or release date announced.
So while the project represents a major potential expansion of the franchise, fans should not expect to see Emi’s series on Netflix immediately.
Who Is Emi Finch?
Emi is particularly interesting because she does not come directly from Michael Connelly’s Lincoln Lawyer novels.
The television series created her as an original character. In Connelly’s books, Mickey has a half-brother named Harry Bosch, the famous detective who became the central character of Amazon’s Bosch franchise. Because the television rights situation prevents Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer from simply bringing Bosch into its universe, the series created Emi as a new member of Mickey’s family.
That gives the writers considerable freedom with her future.
Rather than adapting another existing Connelly storyline, the potential spinoff can establish its own characters, cases and mythology while remaining connected to Mickey Haller.
Will Mickey Haller Appear in the Spinoff?
That remains unknown.
Netflix has not announced whether Manuel Garcia-Rulfo will become a regular or recurring presence in the Emi Finch series. There is also no confirmed information about appearances from other members of Mickey’s team.
Still, Season 5 is clearly designed to make Emi an important part of Mickey’s final story. Netflix’s official synopsis places her request for help at the center of the season’s main case.
That creates an obvious opportunity for the two characters to remain connected even after the flagship series ends.
But any claim that Garcia-Rulfo will make “frequent guest appearances” in the spinoff would currently be speculation rather than confirmed casting news.
Why Netflix Is Ending the Original Series
Netflix has not described Season 5 as a cancellation caused by declining popularity.
Instead, the show’s creators have framed the ending as an opportunity to properly conclude Mickey’s story. Humphrey and Rodriguez said they wanted to bring the adventure to a satisfying close while potentially charting a new course for some characters.
That distinction matters.
Rather than simply abandoning The Lincoln Lawyer, Netflix appears to be closing one chapter while exploring another.
What Happens in Season 5?
The final season will focus heavily on Mickey’s family and a major wrongful-conviction case.
According to Netflix, Emi asks Mickey to help free a woman convicted of murder six years earlier. Mickey takes on a habeas petition, but his investigation exposes increasingly dangerous forces and a deeper web of corruption.
The season will also continue the stories of Mickey’s trusted team, including Lorna, Izzy and Cisco.
That makes Emi more than a convenient spinoff character. Her arrival is directly tied to the central story of the show’s final season.
A New Era for The Lincoln Lawyer
The end of The Lincoln Lawyer Season 5 will undoubtedly be disappointing for fans who have followed Mickey Haller since the show’s Netflix debut.
But the franchise is not necessarily finished.
With Emi Finch already established as a member of Mickey’s family and Cobie Smulders positioned to take a larger role, Netflix has a potential way to preserve the show’s legal-drama identity while building something substantially different.
For now, the biggest questions are whether the Emi Finch project receives a full series order, when production will begin and how closely Mickey Haller will remain connected to the new show.
One thing is certain: Season 5 is Mickey Haller’s final season as the central character of The Lincoln Lawyer, but it may not be the end of the universe Netflix built around him.
