RGG Studio Reveals 50-Year Crime Epic ‘Stranger Than Heaven’ at Xbox Showcase
Japanese game developer SEGA and RGG Studio have officially unveiled major new details about their upcoming action-adventure title Stranger Than Heaven during the special “Xbox Presents” broadcast. The showcase delivered a deep dive into the game’s ambitious story, combat mechanics, music systems, and celebrity-studded cast.
The upcoming title is set to launch this winter on Xbox Series X|S and PC, with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass.
A 50-Year Crime Drama Across Japan
The story of Stranger Than Heaven follows protagonist Makoto Daito over five decades, beginning in 1915 and ending in 1965. Born to a Japanese mother and American father, Makoto struggles with discrimination and hardship before secretly traveling to Japan aboard a smuggler’s ship.
During the voyage, he encounters Orpheus, a charismatic smuggler portrayed by legendary rapper Snoop Dogg. The game also features Cordell Broadus, Snoop Dogg’s son, alongside appearances from Japanese artist Satoshi Fujihara and singer-songwriter Tori Kelly.
The narrative spans five Japanese cities inspired by real-world locations, including Kokura, Kure, Osaka’s Minami district, Atami, and Tokyo’s Shinjuku area. Each city represents a different era in Japan’s history, mixing organized crime, cultural shifts, and entertainment industries.
Music and Showbusiness Play Major Roles
Unlike previous RGG Studio titles, Stranger Than Heaven heavily incorporates music production and talent management systems.
Players can collect sounds from the environment — including street noises, trains, and combat impacts — and later use them to compose original songs. Makoto will also scout performers, organize concerts, and manage musical acts throughout the story.
According to the developers, the game explores the rise of Japan’s entertainment industry while blending themes of ambition, survival, and cultural identity.
New Combat System Introduced
One of the biggest reveals during the showcase was the game’s entirely redesigned combat system.
Players will independently control Makoto’s left and right limbs using separate trigger and bumper inputs, allowing for more tactical and reactive battles. Weapons such as knives, hammers, and katanas can also be upgraded and customized with special abilities.
RGG Studio says the combat is designed to feel cinematic and dynamic, with context-sensitive attacks and environmental interactions playing a major role during fights.
Xbox Game Pass Launch Confirmed
Microsoft confirmed that Stranger Than Heaven will launch as an Xbox Play Anywhere title and will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one.
The game marks one of RGG Studio’s most ambitious projects to date, combining historical storytelling, organized crime drama, music management, and action combat into a single cinematic experience.
Fans can expect more reveals and gameplay details closer to launch later this year.
