The studio behind some of PlayStation’s most intense action games is back with another ambitious project.
Housemarque has unveiled new details about Saros, an upcoming sci-fi action title that blends high-speed combat with cosmic horror — and it could become one of the most distinctive releases on the PlayStation 5.
Known for precision gameplay and relentless combat design, the Finnish developer is building on the legacy it established with its critically acclaimed shooter Returnal. Saros expands that formula with deeper systems, narrative elements, and a mysterious alien world that reshapes itself every time players return.
A Rescue Mission Gone Wrong
In Saros, players step into the role of Arjun, an elite enforcer tasked with investigating a human colony that has suddenly gone silent at the edge of known space.
The search leads to Carcosa, a hostile alien planet where the fate of the missing colonists remains unknown.
But Carcosa hides a strange phenomenon: death is not permanent.
Each time Arjun falls in combat, he resurrects at the expedition’s base and begins the mission again. This looping mechanic forms the backbone of Saros’ gameplay, encouraging players to experiment, learn enemy patterns, and gradually unlock permanent upgrades.
During a recent hands-on preview covering the game’s opening areas — the cliffside Shattered Rise and the underground Ancient Depths — Housemarque also showcased brutal boss encounters that test players’ reflexes and strategy.
Fast Combat Powered by DualSense
Combat in Saros is designed around the advanced features of the DualSense controller.
Weapons such as rifles, hand cannons, and shotguns are scavenged during exploration, each featuring two firing modes. Primary attacks use the standard trigger pull, while alternate abilities activate through the controller’s adaptive trigger resistance.
The result is a tactile shooting system where players feel the difference between weapons and abilities directly through the controller.
Movement also plays a major role. A directional dash allows players to avoid damage, while an energy shield can absorb incoming projectiles. These mechanics create a constant rhythm of dodging, attacking, and countering enemy fire.
According to creative director Gregory Louden, the goal was to rethink how players interact with enemy attacks.
Instead of simply avoiding bullets, players are encouraged to turn them into opportunities.
Turning Enemy Attacks Into Power
A key gameplay twist comes from alien technology discovered on Carcosa.
Arjun gains the ability to harness energy from enemy projectiles, converting it into a powerful secondary weapon. By absorbing attacks with his shield, players charge up devastating blasts capable of wiping out multiple enemies at once.
This mechanic transforms combat encounters into a strategic dance.
Players must decide whether to dodge incoming fire or intentionally absorb it to build energy for stronger attacks.
“We wanted projectiles to become opportunities rather than obstacles,” Louden explained.
The result is a combat system that rewards aggression and quick decision-making.
Eclipse Events Change the Battlefield
Another major gameplay feature is the Eclipse system, which dramatically alters each area of Carcosa.
By activating mysterious devices scattered across the planet, players trigger an eclipse that corrupts the environment. Enemy attacks become more dangerous, including projectiles that reduce the player’s maximum health.
However, the risks come with higher rewards.
Currency earned from defeated enemies increases during eclipses, allowing players to unlock permanent upgrades faster. Corrupted weapons and artifacts also appear, offering temporary abilities unavailable in normal conditions.
This risk-versus-reward structure pushes players to decide how far they are willing to push their luck during each run.
A World That Changes Every Run
Like Returnal, Saros features procedurally structured levels.
While environments and combat encounters are handcrafted by the development team, their arrangement shifts each time players return. According to art director Simone Silvestri, extensive playtesting ensures the changing layouts still feel deliberate and balanced.
Each level includes a “golden path” leading toward the main objective, but side routes often hide valuable upgrades, puzzles, and narrative clues.
Exploration is essential for players hoping to survive deeper into the planet.
A Story Built Around Mystery and Unease
Beyond combat, Saros also expands Housemarque’s storytelling approach.
Players will uncover the fate of the lost colony through logs and environmental clues scattered across Carcosa. Unlike Returnal’s solitary narrative, Saros introduces a crew dynamic, with team members communicating through radio transmissions during missions.
Even these interactions carry an uneasy tone.
The expedition’s AI system — responsible for managing corporate operations on the planet — adds another layer of tension, highlighting the profit-driven motives behind the mission.
Why Saros Matters for PlayStation
For Sony, Saros represents another major exclusive built specifically for the PS5 hardware.
Housemarque’s reputation for tight gameplay and innovative systems has earned the studio a dedicated fan base. If Saros successfully expands on the formula that made Returnal a hit, it could become one of the console’s standout action titles.
With its blend of fast-paced combat, roguelike progression, and psychological sci-fi horror, Saros aims to deliver a uniquely intense experience.
And on the dangerous world of Carcosa, every death may simply be the beginning of another fight for survival.
