The approach draws inspiration from classic role-playing games within the Computer Role-Playing Game tradition, where narrative depth and player choice are central to the experience.

According to programmer John Sadler, that philosophy shaped the entire design.

“We grew up on CRPGs filled with rich, meaningful quests and character exploration that reward genuine engagement,” Sadler explained. “Games where progress demanded real effort and skill.”

Rather than hiding story details behind obscure lore fragments, Sands of Aura presents its narrative more directly, allowing players to connect with the characters and the world they inhabit.

Fast, Reactive Combat Defines the Experience

Combat in Sands of Aura is built around a fast-paced loop of attacking, dodging, blocking, and parrying.

Players also gain access to spellblade-style abilities that open opportunities to counter enemies and chain attacks together. The system is designed to teach its rhythm early in the game, encouraging players to quickly understand timing and positioning.

As players progress, the depth of the game’s equipment system becomes more apparent.
