Perplexity Portable Computer Comes to Windows PCs With NVIDIA RTX

Perplexity is bringing its Portable Computer AI agent to Windows PCs equipped with compatible NVIDIA GeForce RTX and RTX PRO GPUs, expanding its push to run more advanced AI workloads directly on users’ own hardware.

The Windows release is designed around a local-first approach. Portable Computer can analyze files, synthesize information and carry out multi-step tasks on the PC without sending sensitive material to the cloud. Perplexity says work completed locally also does not consume Perplexity Computer credits.

The company first introduced Portable Computer in August as a local version of its Computer agent, initially focused on NVIDIA DGX Spark and compatible RTX systems running Linux. NVIDIA said in September that Windows support was coming as part of its broader effort to simplify local AI agent deployment on RTX hardware.

Perplexity Portable Computer Is Now Available on Windows

The Windows version is available through the Perplexity app for compatible NVIDIA GeForce RTX PCs and NVIDIA RTX PRO Workstations.

The key requirement is significant: supported GPUs need at least 24GB of VRAM.

Instead of requiring users to research models, configure inference software and manage a complicated local AI stack, Perplexity packages the experience around a local model optimized for NVIDIA RTX GPUs.

The company says the setup can use a post-trained version of Qwen 3.8 27B designed to work with Perplexity Computer.

That could make local agentic AI more accessible to PC owners who have powerful RTX hardware but do not want to spend time configuring an AI development environment.

Local AI Keeps Sensitive Files on the PC

Privacy is one of the main reasons Perplexity is positioning Portable Computer differently from a conventional cloud AI chatbot.

The agent can work with information stored locally, including files and other connected resources. Perplexity says sensitive information can remain on the device while the agent performs its work.

The system can also use Computer’s tools, including its browser and proprietary SPACE sandbox.

If a task requires more advanced reasoning or research, Portable Computer can determine that cloud assistance is needed. Importantly, the user is asked for permission before information is sent off-device.

That creates a hybrid model: routine or sensitive processing can stay local, while more demanding work can be escalated to cloud AI when the user approves it.

What Can Portable Computer Do?

Perplexity is targeting practical workflows rather than simple question-and-answer interactions.

For software teams, the agent can examine open pull requests in a connected GitHub project, organize them by status and identify potential next steps. It can also identify outdated documentation and prepare proposed changes for review.

For financial analysis, Perplexity says users can provide brokerage summaries, consolidated 1099s and tax returns and ask the agent to identify recurring holdings associated with avoidable fees or tax drag. The company says the resulting figures can be traced back to specific files and pages without sending the documents to a chatbot.

For startups, the agent can analyze funnel data locally to identify where users are dropping out of an activation process and then send selected findings to a connected Slack workspace.

These examples highlight the bigger shift behind Portable Computer: AI agents are increasingly being designed to perform workflows across files and applications, rather than simply generate text.

Connectors Extend the Agent Across Work Apps

Portable Computer can connect with several services used in everyday workflows.

Perplexity lists support for:

  • Microsoft Outlook
  • OneDrive
  • Word
  • Google Drive
  • Gmail
  • Slack
  • GitHub

That means the local agent can potentially operate across information stored on a PC and data contained in connected work services.

The privacy model, however, is not the same as saying everything connected to the agent always remains local. Cloud escalation remains possible when a task needs it, with Perplexity saying the user is asked for authorization before information is sent off-device.

NVIDIA Is Pushing Local AI Beyond Chatbots

The launch fits into NVIDIA’s larger push to make agentic AI easier to run locally.

At IFA 2026, NVIDIA highlighted simplified local AI support for applications including Perplexity Portable Computer and said local inference optimizations could improve performance on RTX hardware. NVIDIA also announced RTX Spark Windows PCs for October as part of its broader local-AI strategy.

Perplexity’s move therefore arrives as the industry increasingly experiments with hybrid AI systems that combine local computing with cloud models.

The attraction is straightforward: local processing can offer greater control over private information and reduce dependence on cloud usage, while cloud models remain available for tasks that require more advanced reasoning.

Who Can Use Portable Computer?

Perplexity says Portable Computer is available on Windows PCs using NVIDIA GeForce RTX or RTX PRO GPUs with 24GB or more of VRAM.

Support for NVIDIA DGX Station is expected to follow.

The requirement means this is not currently aimed at the average Windows laptop or entry-level gaming PC. Users need relatively powerful NVIDIA hardware with enough VRAM to run the local AI workloads.

For people who already own a high-end RTX workstation or gaming PC, however, the release could turn hardware that is primarily used for gaming, creative work or development into a more capable local AI workstation.

The Bigger Shift Toward Local AI Agents

Portable Computer represents a broader change in how AI assistants are being built.

Instead of sending every request to a remote model, local agents can increasingly perform portions of a workflow directly on a user’s machine. That can be particularly valuable for developers, businesses and professionals handling confidential files.

Perplexity’s approach also avoids forcing users to choose entirely between local and cloud AI.

The local model handles tasks that can be completed on the PC, while the system can use cloud intelligence when additional reasoning or research is required.

For users with compatible NVIDIA hardware, that could make agentic AI more practical while giving them more control over where sensitive information is processed.

Perplexity Portable Computer is now available on compatible Windows RTX PCs, while NVIDIA continues expanding the hardware and software ecosystem around local AI agents.
