Marvel’s Wolverine: How Insomniac Captured Logan

Marvel’s Wolverine Developers Reveal How They Captured Logan’s Rage and Humanity

Marvel’s Wolverine arrives on PlayStation 5 on September 15, and Insomniac Games says creating its version of Logan required a very different approach from the studio’s earlier Spider-Man games.

Ahead of launch, members of the creative team explained how they designed Wolverine’s combat, suit, animation, relationships and story around the character’s defining combination of brutality and humanity. Creative director Marcus Smith, game director Mike Daly, senior art director Grant Hollis, senior animation director Brian Wyser and narrative director Walt Williams discussed what it took to make Logan feel like Wolverine rather than simply another superhero in an Insomniac game.

Insomniac Took a Different Approach to Wolverine

According to Smith, the team quickly recognized that Wolverine could not simply follow the formula established by Insomniac’s Spider-Man games.

Peter Parker and Miles Morales are closely connected to New York and work naturally within an open-world superhero structure. Logan, by contrast, was designed around a more grounded and visceral experience.

The developers wanted Wolverine to feel physically connected to the world around him, with combat and exploration emphasizing close-range encounters rather than the lighter, more agile feeling associated with Spider-Man.

The Claws Define Wolverine’s Combat

For the development team, the claws were central to understanding Logan.

Hollis explained that Wolverine was envisioned as something of a “tank” — a character who is rougher, messier and more destructive than the heroes Insomniac had previously created.

That philosophy influenced everything from the visual design to the animation. Blood, destruction, damage and the physical consequences of combat were important elements in establishing what it means to play as Wolverine.

The result is intended to make Logan feel like a fighter who gets the job done by whatever means are necessary.

Logan’s Rage Comes From His Humanity

One of the most important aspects of the character is the contrast between Wolverine’s violent side and his compassion.

Narrative director Walt Williams highlighted actor Liam McIntyre, who plays Logan, as a major part of developing that duality. The team wanted McIntyre to communicate both Wolverine’s ferocity and animalistic rage and the quieter, gentler side of the character.

That contrast became a major part of the story.

Smith explained that Logan’s anger is particularly powerful when he sees vulnerable mutants being mistreated. His history of protecting mutants makes the sight of them being treated as disposable or used as scientific experiments especially difficult for him to accept.

Daly said the interactive nature of games allows players to experience that conflict rather than simply watching it unfold in a cinematic.

Wolverine’s Suit Combines Comic Book History With Real-World Design

Insomniac also looked backward when creating Wolverine’s suit.

Hollis said the team drew inspiration from Wolverine designs featuring brown and yellow as well as the classic yellow-and-blue look with red elements. However, the developers wanted their version to fit the game’s more grounded universe.

The solution was a tactical interpretation influenced by real-world military equipment, body armor and motorcycle gear.

The team retained yellow as an important part of the design while ultimately incorporating more black than brown.

Sabretooth, Mystique and Jean Grey Bring Conflict to Logan’s Story

Rather than leaving Logan isolated, Insomniac surrounded him with characters who could challenge him emotionally and morally.

Smith described Logan as an introverted character who might otherwise prefer a quiet life at his cabin. Bringing him into a group filled with conflicting personalities gave the writers opportunities for drama.

Sabretooth provides one of the most direct conflicts. The team wanted to explore their complicated history and the shifting boundary between rivalry and loyalty.

Mystique was approached differently. The developers wanted to explore an angle that could surprise players rather than simply repeating familiar versions of the character.

Jean Grey, meanwhile, shares Logan’s concern for protecting vulnerable mutants, although the two characters can have different approaches to that responsibility.

The Reavers and Hand Were Chosen to Challenge Wolverine

The game’s enemies were also selected around a simple problem: Wolverine is already an extremely dangerous fighter, so the opposition needed to feel capable of challenging him.

The Reavers were a natural fit because of their combination of cybernetic enhancements, weapons, armor, endurance and numbers.

The Hand offered another kind of threat through their training and deadly weapons. The developers said both groups also fit naturally into the story and provided enemies that could make players feel they were progressing through their missions.

Sabretooth and Mystique Get New Angles

Williams said the team deliberately avoided simply reproducing relationships and story arcs that audiences had already seen.

For Logan and Sabretooth, that meant exploring their shared past with Team X and the complicated relationship between them. Sabretooth can function almost like an older brother to Logan, while also carrying resentment over feeling abandoned by him.

Mystique was given a different dynamic. Her abilities allowed her to hide her identity for much of her life, but Team X gave her a sense of purpose and freedom. The developers wanted to explore her as someone who genuinely enjoys the life she has chosen rather than simply portraying her as another conflicted character.

Wolverine Moves Like an Animal

Animation was another major part of making Logan feel distinct.

Wyser said the animation team used early sequences as reference points for establishing Wolverine’s physical identity. One of the early examples involved Logan fighting in the snow, helping the team determine which characteristics felt right and which needed to change.

His combat style reflects his extensive training, but the developers intentionally emphasized brawling and the ability to take on multiple opponents.

They also wanted to bring out Wolverine’s animalistic nature during movement. His quadrupedal stride was incorporated into the way he begins running and traverses the world.

Insomniac Wants Players to Feel Empathy for Logan

For Williams, the ultimate goal goes beyond making Wolverine’s combat feel satisfying.

He wants players to finish the game with greater empathy for Logan and an understanding of how much the character has suffered and lost.

That emotional connection is intended to sit alongside the visceral experience of controlling Wolverine. The developers want players not only to enjoy being Wolverine but also to understand the person underneath the claws.

Marvel’s Wolverine comes to PlayStation 5 on September 15, bringing Insomniac’s interpretation of Logan to players with a focus on brutal combat, grounded character design, complicated relationships and the emotional conflict at the heart of Wolverine.
