Kylie Minogue Nervous Ahead of 2026 AFL Grand Final Show

Date:

Kylie Minogue has admitted she is feeling “nervous” ahead of one of the biggest performances of her career, as the Australian pop superstar prepares to headline the 2026 AFL Grand Final pre-game entertainment at Melbourne’s MCG on Saturday.

The 58-year-old Grammy winner will perform a roughly 20-minute set before the Brisbane Lions face the Fremantle Dockers on September 26. The Grand Final is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. AEST, with Minogue expected on stage at around 1:30 p.m.

Despite her decades of experience performing on major international stages, Minogue said she was experiencing the familiar nerves that come with preparing for a major live show.

“I am nervous, excited right now. I am all those things,” Minogue said during a pre-show press conference in Melbourne, according to The Sun.

“When it comes to just about to go on, maybe I will feel right at home. I don’t know.”

Kylie Minogue Says Her Last Tour Took a Physical Toll

Minogue’s comments come after an exhausting period on the road.

The singer wrapped her 66-date Tension Tour in August 2025, and she recalled just how physically demanding the six-month run had been.

“I think I crawled over the finish line,” Minogue said.

She also described the physical challenges of performing at high altitude in parts of Latin America, saying she honestly felt as though she had bruised a rib. European heatwaves added another challenge.

“I had to try and look after my knees and my lungs,” she said.

That experience appears to be part of the reason the scale of Saturday’s performance is weighing on her. The AFL show will require another demanding live production, this time in front of a huge Grand Final audience.

What Kylie Minogue Will Perform at the AFL Grand Final

Minogue is scheduled to headline a 20-minute pre-game performance featuring a large group of dancers and performers.

The AFL has confirmed that the Melbourne-born star will be joined on the entertainment lineup by G Flip, while Michael Paynter will perform the national anthem and Mike Brady will deliver “Up There Cazaly” during the retiree motorcade.

The exact Kylie Minogue setlist has not been officially revealed.

Fox Sports reported that the performance is expected to be a medley of around eight to 10 major songs from across her career. Potential songs include “The Locomotion,” “I Should Be So Lucky,” “Spinning Around,” “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” “Love at First Sight” and “Padam Padam,” although the final setlist remains under wraps.

Minogue has also teased that the show will contain surprises and Easter eggs connected to her career and her Melbourne roots. The AFL reported that she described the performance as a major homecoming moment at the MCG.

Why Kylie Minogue Is Feeling the Pressure

For Minogue, the performance is more than another concert appearance.

She compared putting the show together to being part of a “team sport,” acknowledging the large production crew working behind the scenes.

She also explained that the nerves come from the internal debate that can happen before any major performance.

“The self-talk in your brain leading up to any important gig is this: ‘You can do it, you can’t do it.’ ‘This is going to go right, this is going to go wrong.’ ‘What if? Maybe?’” she said.

The AFL Grand Final is one of Australia’s biggest annual sporting events, making the performance particularly significant for a Melbourne-born artist returning to the MCG stage for the occasion.

Kylie Minogue’s Next Major U.S. Move

The AFL Grand Final is also arriving as Minogue prepares for another major career milestone.

She is set to join Harry Styles for four stadium shows at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, in April 2027. Current ticket listings show Kylie Minogue on the lineup for April 23, April 24, April 30 and May 1.

Minogue announced the collaboration earlier this month, writing on social media: “Together, Together. Harry. Me. Can’t WAIT to see you in April, LA.”

The upcoming dates will give Minogue another opportunity to perform for a major U.S. stadium audience following her AFL Grand Final appearance.

For now, however, her attention is firmly on Melbourne.

With the MCG performance only hours away, Minogue will have to turn those pre-show nerves into the confidence that has carried her through a career spanning decades.

And if her comments are any indication, even a global pop star can still feel the pressure when the biggest stage is in her hometown.
