BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony: StarCraft Returns, Diablo V Announced and Warcraft Goes Big

Blizzard came back to BlizzCon with some of its biggest announcements in years. The 2026 Opening Ceremony revealed a new StarCraft game, officially announced Diablo V, introduced World of Warcraft: Forever, and unveiled major updates across Overwatch, Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm.

The announcements arrived Saturday at the Anaheim Convention Center as Blizzard’s first BlizzCon since 2023. Rather than focusing on a single franchise, the company used the opening ceremony to map out the future of several of its biggest gaming universes.

Here’s everything announced during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony and when players can expect it.

StarCraft Returns as an Open-World Shooter

The biggest surprise for many fans was the return of StarCraft.

Blizzard announced a new original open-world shooter simply titled StarCraft, scheduled to arrive in spring 2030. The game will return players to the Koprulu Sector but will move the franchise far beyond its traditional real-time-strategy roots.

The announcement trailer focuses on the United Earth Directorate preparing for conflict with the Zerg. Blizzard has not presented the project as a new StarCraft RTS, making the genre shift one of the most significant parts of the reveal.

The move is particularly notable because StarCraft has been largely dormant as a major new-release franchise for years. Independent coverage also notes that Blizzard previously attempted to turn the series into a shooter with StarCraft: Ghost, a project that was ultimately canceled.

For longtime fans, the wait is finally over. The question now is whether this radically different StarCraft can live up to the franchise’s legacy.

Diablo V Is Coming in 2029

Blizzard also confirmed Diablo V, with the next mainline Diablo game scheduled for spring 2029.

The premise immediately sets a darker tone. Blizzard says Sanctuary has fallen, Diablo has won, and the new game will explore what happens after the world players knew has already been destroyed.

That gives Diablo V a very different starting point from the usual battle-against-the-forces-of-evil setup. Instead of asking players how to prevent the fall, the game begins after the loss.

But Diablo fans won’t have to wait until 2029 for new content.

Diablo IV Gets a Major Anniversary Update

Diablo IV is celebrating Diablo’s 30th anniversary with Season of Hell’s Legacy, launching September 15.

The season brings back the Prime Evils, including Diablo, alongside the return of Deckard Cain, Nightmare Rifts, anniversary rewards and equipment inspired by different periods in the franchise’s history.

Blizzard is also expanding Diablo IV with the Amazon class in the first half of 2027. The javelin-wielding class will bring another established Diablo archetype into the current game.

Diablo IV is also coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 15 alongside the new season.

And yes, Moophisto is back for the anniversary festivities.

World of Warcraft: Forever Expands the Classic Era

Warcraft received one of the ceremony’s biggest collections of announcements.

The current World of Warcraft storyline is moving toward the next major update, Eclipse (12.2), while Blizzard also offered another look at The Last Titan, the final chapter of The Worldsoul Saga. Blizzard says more information on The Last Titan is coming early next year.

But the bigger surprise was World of Warcraft: Forever.

Forever will become a third way to play World of Warcraft alongside Modern and Classic. It returns to the Vanilla era but expands it with content that wasn’t part of the original experience.

Players can expect:

  • Three new zones
  • More than 1,000 new quests
  • Nine new dungeons
  • Two new raids
  • A new Skyborne race

The beta begins September 17, with the full launch scheduled for November 4, 2026.

That makes Forever one of Blizzard’s most ambitious attempts yet to revisit the original World of Warcraft era without simply reproducing the original game.

Warcraft III Gets Its First New Story in More Than 23 Years

Blizzard also surprised Warcraft III fans with a new campaign for Warcraft III: Reforged.

The Forsaken Kingdom campaign explores the fall of Lordaeron and its transformation into the Undercity. It arrives alongside the 3.0 update, which includes a substantial graphics overhaul and a revamped World Editor.

Even more surprising, the new campaign is available to play now.

Blizzard says this is the first new Warcraft III story in more than 23 years, making the announcement particularly significant for longtime Warcraft players.

Overwatch Adds Doctrine and a New Map

Overwatch’s 10th anniversary celebration focused heavily on what’s coming next.

Season 5 introduces Doctrine, a vampire-inspired Support Hero who uses bat-like drones and life-draining abilities. Players can try Doctrine at BlizzCon and for a limited time from home.

The season also brings major reworks for Sombra and Roadhog, along with a new map called Watchpoint: Grimsvötn.

Season 5 will also conclude The Reign of Talon, which Blizzard describes as the first year-long narrative arc in Overwatch history.

The next Overwatch Spotlight is scheduled for February 2027, when Blizzard plans to reveal more about the game’s future.

Hearthstone Goes Back to Ancient Azeroth

Hearthstone is getting a redesigned Journal that brings quests, achievements and events together while connecting them to the stories of each expansion.

The next major expansion, Reign of the Black Empire, arrives October 20 and takes players into an ancient version of Azeroth when the Old Gods were at the height of their power.

The expansion introduces a new keyword called Assemble, which allows two cards to merge into a stronger card.

Before that, Hearthstone Battlegrounds gets a new minion type called Aberrations on September 22.

Blizzard is also bringing the Monk class to Hearthstone in March 2027. The company says it will be the game’s first new playable class in six years.

Xal’atath Joins Heroes of the Storm

Heroes of the Storm also received a surprise announcement.

Xal’atath is joining the Nexus as the game’s newest Hero on September 28, with the character becoming available on the Public Test Realm on September 14.

Blizzard also teased that there could be more Heroes of the Storm news in the future, although it did not provide additional details during the opening ceremony.

Diablo Is Coming to Netflix

Blizzard is also expanding beyond video games.

A new animated series set in the Diablo universe is in development with Netflix. Blizzard did not announce a release date or provide extensive details, saying more information will come later.

The project is part of a broader push to bring Blizzard’s gaming universes to other forms of entertainment.

BlizzCon 2026 Still Has More to Come

The opening ceremony was only the beginning of the weekend.

BlizzCon 2026 continues with developer panels, gameplay demonstrations, esports and additional franchise-focused presentations. Blizzard’s official schedule lists programming across World of Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, Hearthstone and its Classic Cup events.

For players trying to remember the most important dates, three stand out:

September 15: Diablo IV: Season of Hell’s Legacy launches.

September 17: World of Warcraft: Forever beta begins.

November 4: World of Warcraft: Forever officially launches.

The longer-term releases are even bigger. StarCraft is targeting spring 2030, while Diablo V is scheduled for spring 2029.

Blizzard’s return to BlizzCon therefore wasn’t just about celebrating its past. It was a statement about where the company wants its biggest franchises to go next — and in the case of StarCraft, that future looks very different from what fans may have expected.
