Bitcoin Surges Above $80K as Crypto Rally Accelerates

Bitcoin has climbed above $80,000, reaching its highest level in more than three months as weakness in the U.S. dollar and shifting expectations around U.S. financial policy renewed momentum across cryptocurrency markets.

Bitcoin briefly reached $81,237.94 during Asian trading hours on Tuesday before easing to around $80,323.24, according to Reuters. The move puts the world’s largest cryptocurrency at its highest level since mid-May.

The rally has accelerated since President Donald Trump called on Congress last week to pass legislation establishing clearer rules for the cryptocurrency industry. Bitcoin has gained about 16% since then and is up roughly 28% in August, putting it on track for its strongest monthly performance since November 2024.

Bitcoin Rally Gains Momentum Above $80,000

The latest surge comes as investors reassess the outlook for the U.S. dollar and Treasury bond market.

The U.S. Treasury has announced plans to increase buybacks of longer-dated government bonds, an effort aimed at supporting liquidity and limiting pressure on longer-term yields. The announcement has contributed to renewed concerns about the dollar and encouraged investors to look toward assets outside traditional government debt.

Bitcoin has increasingly been viewed by some investors as an alternative asset when concerns about currency value, government debt or monetary policy intensify.

Gold has also benefited from the recent weakness in the dollar, reaching a three-month high alongside the cryptocurrency rally.

Why the U.S. Dollar Matters for Bitcoin

A weaker dollar can provide a favorable backdrop for assets priced in dollars, including Bitcoin.

Tim Sun, senior researcher at HashKey Group, said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s messaging has strengthened expectations that U.S. policymakers may have limited tolerance for another significant rise in long-term Treasury yields, at least through the midterm elections.

Sun said that environment could create a supportive macroeconomic backdrop for assets such as Bitcoin and gold.

The connection is not a guarantee that Bitcoin will continue rising, but it helps explain why investors have been paying close attention to Treasury policy alongside developments in the crypto market.

Trump’s Push for Clearer Crypto Rules

Another factor supporting Bitcoin has been renewed attention on cryptocurrency regulation.

Trump called on Congress last week to pass a “fair version” of the Clarity Act, legislation designed to establish clearer regulatory definitions for digital assets. Crypto companies have argued that clearer rules would provide greater legal certainty for the industry.

However, the legislation has faced obstacles in the Senate, meaning the regulatory outlook remains uncertain despite the White House’s support.

For cryptocurrency investors, progress on legislation could become another important market catalyst if lawmakers move toward a clearer framework for digital assets.

Investors Turn to the “Debasement Trade”

The recent Treasury moves have also revived discussion around what market participants call the debasement trade.

The basic idea is that investors may seek physical and digital assets when they become concerned that government efforts to manage bond yields could put additional pressure on fiat currencies.

Geoff Kendrick, global head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered, described the Treasury’s actions as particularly favorable for Bitcoin, while IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said renewed debasement concerns had encouraged buyers to move into both physical and digital assets.

Sycamore also said a sustained break above the recent resistance area could potentially open the way toward $95,000 to $100,000.

That is an analyst projection, not a guaranteed price target, and Bitcoin remains highly sensitive to changes in market sentiment.

Bitcoin’s Next Test Could Be $100,000

The immediate question for cryptocurrency investors is whether Bitcoin can hold above $80,000 after its rapid August advance.

A sustained move higher would put increasingly higher price levels back into focus, while a reversal could test whether the latest rally was driven primarily by short-term positioning and macroeconomic expectations.

Bitcoin’s performance will likely continue to depend on several factors, including the direction of the U.S. dollar, Treasury bond yields, progress on U.S. crypto legislation and broader investor appetite for risk.

For now, Bitcoin’s move above $80,000 marks a significant comeback for the cryptocurrency and gives the market a fresh level to watch as the month draws to a close.
