Avengers: Endgame Reclaims All-Time Box Office Crown From Avatar With $2.925 Billion
The 2019 Marvel blockbuster has moved back into first place after its latest theatrical re-release, narrowly surpassing Avatar’s worldwide total.
“Avengers: Endgame” is once again the highest-grossing movie in box office history.
The Marvel blockbuster has reclaimed the worldwide box office record after Disney’s latest theatrical re-release pushed its lifetime gross to approximately $2.925 billion, putting it just ahead of James Cameron’s “Avatar,” which currently stands at around $2.923 billion after multiple re-releases.
The difference is only a few million dollars, but it marks another chapter in a box office rivalry that has stretched across more than a decade.
Endgame Takes the Crown Back
“Avatar” originally established itself as the biggest movie ever after its 2009 release, holding the top position for roughly a decade.
That changed in 2019 when “Avengers: Endgame” arrived in theaters and became a global phenomenon. The film eventually overtook “Avatar” during its original theatrical run, giving Marvel the box office record.
But the battle did not end there.
“Avatar” returned to theaters in 2021 ahead of the release of “Avatar: The Way of Water.” The additional theatrical revenue was enough to push Cameron’s film back above “Endgame” and restore its place at No. 1.
Now, five years later, “Endgame” has moved ahead again.
The latest change comes from Disney and Marvel’s decision to put the superhero epic back on the big screen, adding more than $126 million worldwide to its lifetime total.
Disney Wins Either Way
There is an unusual twist to the rivalry: Disney owns both sides of it.
“Avengers: Endgame” was released by Disney and Marvel, while “Avatar” originally came from 20th Century Fox. Disney acquired Fox’s film assets in 2019, meaning the company now owns both franchises competing for the top spot.
Disney also controls several other films near the top of the worldwide box office rankings.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” has earned approximately $2.33 billion globally, while “Titanic” stands at around $2.26 billion. “Avengers: Infinity War” has passed $2 billion as well.
The result is an extraordinary concentration of box office power within Disney’s film portfolio.
Why Marvel Brought Endgame Back
The latest “Endgame” re-release is not simply about revisiting a record.
Marvel is using the theatrical return to build anticipation for “Avengers: Doomsday,” the next major Avengers movie, which is scheduled to debut in December.
“Endgame” remains one of the defining movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe because it served as the culmination of the franchise’s first major era. The film brought together characters played by Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman and Anthony Mackie, among many others.
Its enormous theatrical success reflected the scale of that buildup, following years of interconnected Marvel releases.
The upcoming “Doomsday” is expected to reunite a similarly large collection of Marvel characters, with Anthony and Joe Russo returning as directors.
The Box Office Record Is Still Moving
The latest result also shows how difficult it is to treat the all-time box office ranking as a permanent list.
Both “Avatar” and “Endgame” have benefited from returning to theaters, allowing older blockbusters to generate significant additional revenue years after their original releases.
For Marvel, the timing is particularly important. The “Endgame” re-release has generated more than $126 million worldwide while helping renew attention around the next Avengers installment.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe remains the highest-grossing film franchise in history, with its movies collectively generating more than $35 billion worldwide.
With “Avengers: Doomsday” approaching, the latest box office record may be less about closing a chapter than setting the stage for another major Marvel theatrical event.
