Angela Bassett Returns as Marie Laveau in ‘American Horror Story: 13’

Angela Bassett is stepping back into one of her most recognizable American Horror Story roles as Marie Laveau, just as FX’s American Horror Story: 13 prepares to premiere.

Bassett discussed her return during a September 23 appearance on Good Morning America, giving fans a preview of her comeback while keeping the details of Marie Laveau’s new storyline largely secret.

The timing comes just one day before the Season 13 premiere on September 24. The new installment is being positioned as a major franchise reunion, bringing back several actors and characters from earlier seasons.

Angela Bassett Reprises Marie Laveau

Bassett first played Marie Laveau in American Horror Story: Coven, the show’s third season. The character became one of the most recognizable figures from the anthology’s supernatural mythology.

Now, Marie Laveau is officially among the returning characters in American Horror Story: 13. Disney’s official promotional material has confirmed her return alongside other familiar characters from across the franchise.

Bassett’s Good Morning America appearance offered fans a look at her return without giving away major plot details. That leaves much of Marie Laveau’s role in the new storyline to be revealed when the episodes arrive.

‘American Horror Story: 13’ Is a Major Reunion

Marie Laveau is only one piece of the Season 13 reunion.

Jessica Lange is returning to the franchise and is reprising multiple characters, including Constance Langdon from Murder House, Sister Jude from Asylum, Fiona Goode from Coven and Elsa Mars from Freak Show.

Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Emma Roberts, Kathy Bates, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe and Leslie Grossman are also among the returning franchise performers.

The result is a season that draws heavily on characters and mythology established across previous installments rather than functioning solely as an entirely separate horror story.

When Does ‘American Horror Story: 13’ Premiere?

American Horror Story: 13 premieres Thursday, September 24, at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on FX, with the episodes also available on Hulu. The premiere features three episodes.

The season will contain 13 half-hour episodes, with the first three arriving on premiere night. Disney’s release schedule lists subsequent episodes through October 29.

The premiere also arrives as the American Horror Story franchise reaches its 15th anniversary, having originally debuted in 2011.

Why Marie Laveau’s Return Matters

For longtime viewers, Bassett’s return creates a direct connection between the new season and Coven, one of the anthology’s most recognizable installments.

Disney’s promotional materials have also confirmed the return of characters including Constance Langdon, Cordelia Goode, Madison Montgomery, Rubber Man, Twisty the Clown and Kai Anderson.

That gives viewers plenty of potential connections to look for as the season unfolds, particularly with several actors returning to characters they previously played.

At the same time, the production has kept significant story details under wraps. Bassett’s appearance on Good Morning America offered a preview without revealing how Marie Laveau fits into the larger Season 13 narrative.

What Happens Next

The immediate question for American Horror Story fans is how Marie Laveau will be incorporated into the new story and whether her return will connect directly with other Coven characters and mythology.

With the three-episode premiere arriving September 24, viewers will soon have the first opportunity to see how Bassett’s character fits into the franchise’s latest chapter.

The return of Marie Laveau, alongside the wider cast reunion, makes American Horror Story: 13 a significant callback to the show’s earlier seasons while introducing a new chapter of its supernatural anthology.
